Service Area

This office serves  the District of Columbia and the following counties in Virginia: Albemarle, Alexandria, Arlington, Augusta, Bath, Charlottesville, Clarke, Culpeper, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Greene, Harrisonburg, Highland, Loudoun, Madison, Manassas, Manassas Park, Orange, Page, Prince William, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Staunton, Warren, Waynesboro, and Winchester.



From Route 50 driving east (towards Washington, D.C.), turn left onto Prosperity Avenue.
From Route 50 driving west (towards Fairfax), turn right onto Prosperity Avenue.
From Interstate 66 driving east (towards Washington, D.C.), take exit 62 for Nutley Street/VA-243 South.
Turn left onto Lee Highway (VA-237/US-29).
Turn left onto Prosperity Avenue.


Use the orange line to get to the Dunn Loring metro rail stop or metro rail station.

Filing Information

Follow the instructions on the form(s) that you are filing. If the instructions on the application tell you to file the form at a USCIS local office and you live within this service area, please mail your application or make an INFOPASS appointment to submit your application in person.

Case Status and Referral Follow-ups

If you want to know the status of a case that is pending at this office, you should first call customer service at 1-800-375-5283. If your case is outside of our normal processing time, as shown on the uscis.gov web site, a customer service representative will ask USCIS to research your case and we will send you a letter with further information.

If the customer service representative instructs you to visit our office, you must schedule anINFOPASS appointment, on our website, to visit this office in person.

Remember to bring the following items noted below, to the office for your appointment:

  • Any notices we have sent to you
  • A valid photo identity document, such as a driver license, passport, employment authorization document, etc.
  • A copy of the application or petition that you filed
  • Proof of paying the fee such as a copy of a cancelled check (front and back) or money order that has been traced for payment, or a handwritten receipt from an Immigration Services Officer.

Visiting the Office

In order to visit this office or to speak with an Immigration Services Officer in the Customer Service Division, you must have an appointment scheduled by USCIS or you must schedule an INFOPASS appointment, on the USCIS website.  When our INFOPASS appointment times are full, you will be unable to schedule an appointment.  Please try again at a later time.

INFOPASS appointments will not be made available in the system on Thursday afternoons.  In addition, once per month, usually on a Thursday, INFOPASS appointments may not be made available for the entire day due to staff training.

We have limited seating capacity in our waiting room areas. Unless the presence of your child is required, please do not bring small children to the scheduled interview or oath ceremony.

You may also come into the office and drop off reschedule requests in the designated drop box, just inside the public entrance, during business hours (7:00AM to 4:30PM), Monday through Friday.

Your request must be received before the scheduled interview date and include your Alien Registration Number, which is written on the appointment notice. Your request must also include the reason(s) for the request to reschedule.

For all applicants, petitioners, beneficiaries, and any other individuals scheduled for an interview at the Washington Field Office, the first reschedule request for that particular application or petition (as requested by the applicant, petitioner, or attorney) will generally be granted.  The benefit of the first reschedule is limited to one per application or petition. Where the first reschedule request has already been granted, all future reschedule requests will require a showing of good cause.

Naturalization Ceremonies

The Washington Field Office rarely conducts same-day naturalization ceremonies but will do so for military N-400 filings, Section 319(b) N-400 filings, as well as on most N-400 re-examination days (second interview to pass the naturalization test).

Prohibited Items

Rules and regulations governing public buildings and grounds can be found at Title 41, Code of Federal Regulations, Subpart 101-20.3 and Title 18, United States Code, Section 930.  Additionally, this office prohibits:

  • Recording Devices (including cell phones with recording capabilities)
  • Food or Beverages
  • Smoking
  • Animals (other than service animals)
  • Sharp Items
  • Flammable Materials and Liquids
  • Pepper Spray
